Call To Artists

Crafting Our Future From Our Past

GOAL

In presenting the Bourbon Barrel Project on Town Branch, LexArts seeks to accomplish three things: highlight Lexington's rich bourbon heritage and the role the Town Branch played in its development; emphasize the potential for the transformation of downtown Lexington; and, generate more interest in, and support for public art.

PROJECT OVERVIEW

Artists from Kentucky will be juried in a two-step process to paint and embellish authentic bourbon barrels for outdoor display in Lexington, Kentucky, during the fall of 2013, celebrating the history and lore of bourbon and Lexington's Town Branch, and coinciding with The Kentucky Bourbon Festival and The Bourbon Chase. The barrels will be exhibited in downtown Lexington following the path of the Town Branch, which flows under Vine Street and Midland Avenue.

Authentic bourbon barrels will arrive in Lexington in late-June. Artists will receive one (1) barrel, which must remain in its original, iconic form, as a major goal of this project is to celebrate Lexington's Bourbon heritage and its future as envisioned in the Town Branch Commons project. Artists are requested to submit designs for painting and embellishing the barrels for this major public art project. Barrels weigh approximately 125 pounds.

The Bourbon Barrel Project on Town Branch will arrange for each selected and sponsor-matched barrel to be mounted onto a metal stanchion which will be attached to a concrete base. The stanchion will ensure easier viewing and excellent visibility from location to location. An identifying plate will be affixed to the base naming the barrel, the artist, and the sponsor(s).

HOW TO APPLY

Deadline for submission is 5pm on June 17, 2013. All entries, to include the application, digital images of your recent work, and your resume, must be submitted electronically, and the physical design proposals must be received in the LexArts office by said deadline. Once you begin the electronic application process, please be prepared to fully complete the application and upload all documents and image files.

Artists will submit:
1.The application
2.Your resume, which will include your current address, phone number, e-mail address and website
3.Five digital images of your recent work in high-resolution jpeg format (up to 1MB each). Clearly identify each image with your name and describe the medium used in the work.

Payment will be made to artists at the time the completed barrel is delivered to the designated warehouse and accepted by LexArts If a design changes radically from the initial proposal, a new design specification must be submitted. If no new specifications are submitted for the design change, the artist will not receive the honorarium.

Selected and matched artists will be given specific instructions regarding painting and finishing materials at the time they pick up their barrel(s).

SELECTION PROCESS

Sponsors will be encouraged to choose from the BBP Portfolio; however, a sponsor may elect to contract directly with an artist. If a sponsor negotiates directly with an artist, the sponsor is responsible for paying the artist's honorarium. All other design approvals, conditions and deadlines apply. LexArts reserves the right to approve all barrel designs and the artist must submit a design proposal. No barrel will be released without prior design approval.

While artists are free to submit any design, priority will be given to proposals that feature one or more of the following themes:

2.The History of Manchester Street and the Distillery District
3.The unique physical characteristics of Town Branch
4.A vision for the proposed Town Branch Commons and The Rupp Arena Arts & Entertainment District
